The Scripps Howard Foundation, with the Indiana University School of Journalism, established the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition in 1984 to honor the memory of the journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press International from 1912-1920.

Journalism students submit an entry form, portfolio of their work, letter of recommendation, 400-word essay and resume to the Scripps Howard Foundation for consideration.

Paid Internship Available for Mountainlair Programs and Special Events--WVUp All Night/Mountaineer Week

The WVU Mountainlair is seeking an intern to help plan, promote, and advertise WVUp All Night and Mountaineer Week. Interns will create weekly flyers, posters and advertisements and will update all social media outlets. Other internship duties include conducting a survey to gain student feedback, attending weekly WVUp All Night Meetings, and must be willing to serve on the Mountaineer Week Committee to assist with all aspects of the programs.

Students must be a major in Advertising, PR, Marketing, or Graphic Design. Interested students should have experience using a digital camcorder and editing software. Students with website experience and graphic design experience are preferred. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher is required. This position is available for the Fall Semester only and will require no more than 20 hours per week.

The WVU Mountainlair is seeking interns to help plan, promote, and advertise Mountaineer Idol. Interns will create weekly flyers, posters, advertisements and scripts. Interns will film and participate in judging requirements for Mountaineer Idol. Other duties include serving as the liaison with the programming unit and Mountaineer Idol contestants and assisting with planning, working, and helping the Mountaineer Week Committee.

Student photographer's work in local exhibit

Bracken’s images represent the span of her experiences during a two-week journey through China last summer. During the 15days, she, six other students and Assistant Professor Lois Raimondo explored Shanghai, Guilin, Yangshuo, Xi’an, Beijing and places in between.

Bracken, a native of Waco, Texas, plans to graduate from the School of Journalism this May. Her exhibit, “Approaching China,” will be on display through March 30.

Project promotes community service

Six West Virginia University seniors are busy preparing a campaign for the Center of Civic Engagement to bring a new-found sense of community to campus.

These students, led by P.I. Reed School of Journalism Assistant Professor Rita Colistra and CCEOperations Coordinator Brett White, will research, plan and implement a public relations campaign for the CCE.

Students to promote Fairmont's Buy Local campaign

West Virginia University students are using skills learned in the classroom to help improve Fairmont’s economy.

Six public relations seniors in the P.I. Reed School of Journalism have teamed up with the Fairmont City Planner and Mainstreet Fairmont to create a Buy Local campaign for the city. The project aims to increase awareness about the benefits of shopping closer to home. Buying locally helps to keep local businesses thriving while also keeping more revenue in Fairmont.

War reporting pioneer and beloved SOJ professor dies at 79

A West Virginia University journalism professor whose tenacious coverage of the Vietnam War established him as a highly-revered print reporter of the 20th century has passed away at 79.

Funeral arrangements are being made by his family, who plan to hold a memorial service in his hometown – Uniontown, Pa. – sometime next week.

WVU PRSSA to host showing of new documentary, Q&A session with producers

The West Virginia University Public Relations Student Society of America will present a film and discussion on Monday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in G20 Ming Hsieh Hall. The WVU Perley Issac Reed School of Journalism will co-sponsor the event.

The documentary, Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and the Search for Identity, tells the story of Argentina’s “Dirty War,” when a military dictatorship controlled the country. From 1976-1983, human rights advocates estimate as many as 30,000 people were tortured and killed, 500 of whom were pregnant women or new mothers.
